What Goes Around Comes Around

by Vickie G. Paver

Celine Dion, the voice behind the love theme for the movie, "Titanic", sings another song called, "Treat Her like a Lady." The essence of the song is that the things you do and the way that you treat people has its end results; what goes around comes around. She sings about a young woman that gets involved with a disreputable man. As the song progresses, the young woman finds out that his intentions are not honorable and that he took her for a fool. Her friends warned her to forget it, but she wouldn't. Losing control of her emotions, she ends up in jail because she assaulted him. The song is emotional as the words are repeated several times; "what goes around comes around!" Consequences! Heartbreak! Regrets!

As I listened, I thought of several other sad stories about how people treated each other badly, and the consequences they received. I also thought about how this song reiterates Biblical truth, although not intentionally. I guess we all know that we should treat others well in a world we think may have gone crazy. The daily paper is full of reports about school shootings, rapes, adultery in high places, rudeness, people mocking those who are different from them.  The list goes on, doesn't it? It is enough to make one want to cry, to say the least!

Maybe, consequences, for most of us, does not involve jail time for assaulting someone.  It may mean, in fact, living with regret and having no peace or joy. Most things we do or say, or don't do or say, affects someone in our life. Life is always busy, the world is whirling by at speeds beyond our comprehension; time is gone before we know it. We have a responsibility to others. We don't take anything with us, but leave plenty behind. It's what we are leaving behind that makes a difference. A life lived to the fullest in the light of God's word and love poured out leaves the greatest legacy. Also, the rewards are way beyond this world! Show your love to those whom you love. Then, go a step further; give a little to those who may need that one word of encouragement. Hug a hurting child, listen to that aged person, kiss the head of someone bed-ridden, and live with no regrets. Remember:  what goes around, comes around. Peace, thankfulness, contentment, and joy, are the greatest returns.

Luke 6: 38 "Give, and it will be given to you: good measure pressed down, shaken together, and running over will put into your bosom. For with the same measure that you use, it will be measured back to you. (NKJV)

"Giving Your Best"

It's the hand we clasp with an honest grasp

That gives a hearty thrill;

It's the good we pour into others' lives

That comes back our own to fill.

It's the dregs we drain from another's cup

That makes our own seem sweet;

And the hours we give to another's need

That makes our life complete.

It's the burdens we help another bear

That makes our own seem light.

It's the danger seen for another's feet

That shows us the path to right.

It's the good we do each passing day,

With a heart sincere and true;

In giving the world your very best

Its best will return to you.
