Times and Seasons, A Snow Lady For a Reason
By Vickie G. Paver
If you live in the north, you most likely have dealt with some relentless winters. By midwinter, most everyone I know is whimpering and complaining about the cold and bitter winds, piles of snow, traveling conditions, and more. Just when we think things are getting better, we generally get a blizzard. In spite of this, winter holds many joys and pleasures. Yes, I said, "joys and pleasures!" I simply think we tend to lose sight of the joys of winter, especially when it lingers on longer than we think it should.
On the other hand, you have the winter sports enthusiasts who love the snow! They brave the cold to ski, snowmobile, and snowboard and are charmed by winter's bountiful snowfall.
For those of us who are less than enthused about such sports, winter still holds some great things for us. Who can deny the beauty of fallen snow as it covers the trees and everything else in sight in a thick feathery blanket of pure white? A photographer's dream for sure.
What joy it brings to our children and grandchildren as they express their creativity in sculpting snowmen, snow ladies and snow forts! Snow is a wonderful and plenty medium in winter for little and big artists. Just ask me. I made a snow lady (all by myself) with a pink scarf and pastel cloak. When I was done, I sat back and admired her radiant smile and a look on her face that said, "fun." I laughed heartily because, for some reason, I saw just a glimpse of myself in her. You see, I'm somewhere between middle aged and senior citizen and did something that some people my age would think kind of silly. Yet, I allowed myself a bit of joy and a lot of laughter! Laughter is something I think we all need, more than ever, in the winters of our lives.
When the winter seasons of our lives are lingering on longer than we think they should, we need to find some kind of release. That may mean we have to consciously look for joy! However you do that is up to you. It may mean building a snow person, but it may mean reading a funny book, being creative in some way or perhaps surrounding yourself with people who love you. We all go through trials (winter seasons) in our lives. Yet, we need to somehow find a way to look beyond the trials for joy
