Suicidal Frogs!

By Vickie G. Paver

Every time my sister-in-law called me this last month, I would be scooping dead frogs out of our pool, even though it was late fall!! So she started calling our pool the "suicide pool." I really felt bad and wondered why in the world these frogs would not stay out of our pool! I thought they must be awfully stupid frogs. Perhaps the water seemed inviting and they didn't notice the chemicals before they jumped into the pool. I know the frogs could get out of the pool because I would see them sitting on the patio. Whenever I would go near the frogs to try to "save" them, they would jump back in. So what gives? I know they didn't think the pool was dangerous to their health and welfare or they wouldn't be in the pool, but perhaps they didn't care. Who knows what the frogs really thought, though? All I know is that I'm not a reader of the frogs' intent. It is so sad to report. About thirty frogs, in less than a month, have committed suicide!

The death of these poor frogs got me thinking about my own spiritual life. Okay, so here I go again, writing another devotional derived from the demise of our frog population. Maybe you remember the one about Harry? If not look it up here at

I better make my point about this whole story concerning the suicidal frogs. Many times as Christians we let ourselves slip into the waters of little white lies, gossip, complacency, fear, anger, and many other things. Why do we do this? I guess for no other reason than that we are human and still have the potential to sin,. However, staying in such waters is "spiritual suicide." Maybe, at the time, the waters of "seemingly insignificant sin," appeared harmless. It is possible that at first such waters even seemed inviting. After all, what harm could a little dip cause? My personal feeling is that it can leave lasting spiritual scars on us. Such scars are hard to get over. What do I mean? Well, it is like this: do you know anyone who is a gossip or has a sharp tongue, has a bad temper, even though the person is a Christian? It is hard to look at that person as a person of genuine faith. As I thought about this little lesson concerning the frogs and the dangerous chemicals, I took it to heart. I asked myself, “What pool am I swimming in? Is it dangerous?” I really didn't like the answers I got.

None of us like to face up to our weaknesses or sin. It is clearly a normal human response, but we need to be careful about swimming in such dangerous waters. My advice is that if you are swimming in the dangerous waters of some ongoing sin, get out of the pool! God is a God of grace and patience. He will forgive and help us to move on to better waters, the waters of praise, love, compassion, truthfulness, defending our brothers and sisters in Christ and living for Him in every area of our lives. Happy swimming! Oh, my! With the snowfall we had today (November 22nd) I guess no one around here will be swimming! Grin =) Anyway, hope you got the drift. (pun intended. =)
