"Clinging"

by Vickie G. Paver

Abigail was sitting at her sewing machine, making a dress for her two-year-old granddaughter. As she sat there tacking the collar in place, she began thinking about the activities on Friday, when she baby-sat four of her grandchildren. She remembered laughing heartily as her little "bug-a-bug" entered the kitchen doorway early that morning, saying, "Hold me grandma, hold me." The rest of the gang shadowed behind her, whispering their "Good morning Grandma" as they stacked their book bags on the floor.

While balancing her littlest sweetheart from one hip to the other, Abigail placed the cereal bowls on the table. The chitter chatter was noisy that Friday, as Abigail tried to talk to her other grandchildren while the two year old continued to demand her attention. When breakfast was over, Papa drove the three oldest grandchildren to school.

The morning routine had begun as Abigail gave her granddaughter a tubby and got her dressed. Dishes were still on the table as Abigail sat down to read to her. Next they played dollies, tickled each other, played chase the "bug-a-bug," and finally put in a movie at the request of her grandchild. The movie, of course, they had watched one million and one times before! The movie was about a pig, called "Babe." The morning slipped away and Papa got stuck washing the dishes as grandma held her granddaughter. The whole morning was like that as her little "bug-a-bug" clung to her.

Finally, Abigail put her foot down, as much as a grandma can with a two year old. The little one whined and cried, "Grandma, hold me, hold me all day!" What a dilemma. Abigail got up to sort the laundry anyway and when she did her little "bug-a-bug" sat on grandma’s foot and tightly wrapped her little arms around Abigail’s leg! Grandma kept on walking and "bug" got a ride and a good laugh.

Abigail’s thoughts continued as she sat at the sewing machine while she put the finishing touches on the collar of her little "bugs" dress. She knew that even though it was tiring to have a child clinging to her all day, it was nice to be wanted. Abigail enjoyed her relationship with her grandchildren very much. She was also amazed that her grandchildren didn’t seem to get tired of being around her. As Abigail thought about this, a verse came to mind in Matthew 18:3, "…Assuredly, I say to you, unless you are converted and become as little children, you will by no means enter the kingdom of heaven." Abigail knew that her relationship with God should reflect more of a "clinging" to God every day of her life. Every morning she did set aside time with God, to read His word and pray, but was that really enough? Yes, she did talk to God some throughout the day, but did she really desire His presence everywhere she walked, stood, or sat? The question evoked the thought that the Lord would really like her to cling to Him---

A Hymn titled," My Goal is God Himself." and the verse "...that God may be all in all." I Corinthians 15:28, says all that needs to be said.
