Sweet or Smelly?
By Vickie G. Paver
The stench was over powering as Abigail passed the deer-processing place. She felt nauseated and woozy at the smell of blood and guts and an intense wild game smell. She picked up her pace to get away from the odors.
As she continued her walk Abigail noticed that it was garbage day in her community. She had forgotten all about it. The garbage truck was parked on the side of the road. The garbage man was throwing garbage from cans into the back of the truck. The stink of week old garbage coming from the truck permeated her nostrils. She held her breath as she hurriedly walked past. Maybe if she kept up a fast pace she wouldnt have to breath in those disgusting odors again! At last she passed six houses that had garbage set out, waiting to be picked up. YES! She would stay ahead of the garbage truck!
The snow was beautiful, but this mornings walk wasnt exactly the romantic walk that she had anticipated it to be. She had imagined the smell of pine and then the breakfast smells escaping from the local restaurant. Just as she was thinking about these wonderful aromas, an Amish buggy passed by. Oh my! It definitely was not pleasant to the nose as the horses hummed by and left their muck on the road! Why? Why? Why did she have to put up with all these smells on this fine winter morning?
All these horrible smells that Abigail put up with, upset her. Then suddenly a thought hit Abigail! Yes here it was staring her in the face, another lesson from God. As she thought about the deer processing place, the garbage truck and the horses, she wondered if her actions and thoughts were ever disgusting to God. Did God hold His breath when she prayed? She thought that it was not fair to have a lesson like this! After all, she was human! What about how much God loves her? What about grace? All these things were true. God loved her enough to send His Son, Jesus, to die for her. He gave His grace to her daily, but Abigail also knew that she had to take care of sin on a daily basis. If not, it sometimes piles up, like in the garbage truck. She felt sorry and wanted her actions and thoughts to be a sweet fragrance to God. She must accept this lesson for what it was God wanting her to listen to the Holy Spirit. He wanted her to become more Christ like. Which is why He patiently continues to give Abigail lessons as she walks each day.
