Stress Burner Number Seven

By Vickie G. Paver

When the emergency room nurse asked Abigail how she burned her arm, she said, "Stress Burner Number Seven." She had the nurse's attention with that comment. The nurse questioned further, "Stress Burner what?" "Yes, you heard me right," said Abigail. "It happened because of an article I was reading about 30 ways to relieve stress. The number seven stress hint was to light scented candles and position them all around a tub filled with scented bubble bath. "Have you ever tried this?" Abigail asked the nurse.

"I really think stress reliever number seven must be for someone who is more agile than I am though! You should have seen it! The tub was full of rose scented bubbles, surrounded by rose scented candles that illuminated the whole bathroom. As I was carefully stepping into the tub, to avoid knocking over the candles, I slipped, knocking the candles over. I fell into the tub!   Enormous waves flowed over the sides of the tub! At the same time several candles fell onto my arm as I struggled to keep my head above water. That is how my arm got burned! My bathroom floor was flooded! Look at my hair! It is singed! So here I am in the emergency room instead of seventh heaven." Abigail and the nurse laughed hysterically at that.

Later at home, Abigail realized that she was led by her desire to be pampered like the rich and famous. Her romantic self got her in trouble once again. Besides, Abigail knew that the lady in the sitting in the tub, with bubble bath and candles glowing all around, was definitely photographed on a stage set. And that most likely the camera crew had carefully placed lighted candles all around the tub and then blew out the candles after the photo shoot! Abigail knew she had been enticed by the look of luxury. Self indulgence permeates even many good women's magazines and the supposed splendor of luxury can carry a person away. Many people in this world would love to just have clean water to drink. The thought startled Abigail.  Her so-called necessities were truly many other people's luxuries. She also realized her "true" stress buster is God and that privileged circumstances and lavishness, no matter how tempting, just doesn't cut it! Abigail prayed that the next time she was enticed by material things she would choose to be true to her practical self and sensitive to the Holy Spirit about what she really needed.
